Course Description

Join Advanced Sommelier, Cara De Lavallade, in WCU's first wine course - Discovering Wine: A Sensory Exploration

A course exploring the fundamental basics of wine. Discussions of geography, climate, geology, winemaking, food, and culture lay the foundation for understanding what makes different wines unique and how they can best be appreciated. By tasting a series of wines that are typical of their style and origin, we can learn the characteristics of the most important grape varieties and make connections between the vineyard and what goes into the glass.

Course Objectives:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the distinction between the most common grape varieties, including areas of the world where they are cultivated, common winemaking techniques, and typical aromatic and flavor characteristics
  • Establish a fundamental understanding of how geography, climate, weather, geology, winemaking, culture, and food all contribute to a finished wine.
  • Learn the basics of storing and serving wines
